Oreta and Telstra bring SD-WAN to Kings Transport

Follows migration to Google Cloud

IT services provider Oreta and Telstra have partnered to deploy a new SD-WAN network for Kings Transport.

The Melbourne-based freight company tapped Oreta to refresh its ageing networking hardware in an effort to cut down its costs and increase bandwidth.

The deployment came off the back of a nine-month migration from Kings’ on-premise hardware to Google Cloud Platform.

“On the back of Oreta migrating all Kings Transport applications from on-premise to GCP, the Kings IT department wanted a more agile and flexible network that can give them better access to their applications in Google,” explained the provider’s co-founder and director Rajitha Rajasingham.

“The challenges we faced in this project were finding a solution that provided faster bandwidth, one that would be quick-to-market and assisting Kings Transport to replace all their existing ageing network hardware at a reduced monthly cost over 36 months.”

Oreta, a Telstra Gold Partner in data and managed network services, tapped into the telco’s SD-WAN solution to replace the Melbourne-based company’s legacy Telstra MPLS.

The solution comprised of a Telstra internet direct fibre and 4G sim service at each of Kings’ nine sites, plus a refresh of Cisco Meraki firewalls, switches and wireless access points, ordered via Telstra’s Business Technology Centre.

In addition, Oreta also provided managed services on the Meraki and Palo Alto firewalls at each site, plus professional services to build and migrate from the traditional MPLS to a software-defined network supported by Cisco Meraki and Palo Alto.

“Bringing all the vendors together and building a solution fit for purpose also brought its challenges,  but we were able to work closely with Telstra and Cisco to custom build a solution that fits Kings Transport needs as they migrate all their workloads to GCP,” Rajasingham added.

The total SD-WAN migration time has so far taken six months and work remains ongoing. Telstra Enterprise head of Australian partner sales Doug Henderson called the projects a “real-world example of the impact partnerships can accomplish”.

“By enabling the very best from Oreta as a Telstra Enterprise Partner together with our technology vendors and our world-class connectivity, this collaboration delivered a genuine customer-centric solution for Kings Transport,” he added.
