NBN Co, the company behind the roll out of the National Broadband Network (NBN), has reported 4.6 million premises had an active service over the network by December 2018.

This represents a 38 per cent increase compared to the same period last year, when it revealed 3.4 million premises were active.

Part of the plan for 2020 is for the build to be complete and eight million premises to be activated.

There has been an increase in two million premises ready to connect in the past 12 months with a total of 8.1 million premises in December 2018, which means that 70 per cent of Australian homes and businesses are able to connect.

At this time last year NBN Co had 6.1 million premises ready to connect. The plan for 2020 is to have 11.7 million premises ready to connect.

“With less than eighteen months of the rollout remaining, there is a significant amount of work still to be done in partnership with the industry, as we continue our momentum to deliver on our biggest ever deployment year and transition into our biggest activation year," NBN Co CEO Stephen Rue said.

“I have full confidence in our ability to reach our 2020 target as our strong track record demonstrates.  The executive leadership team remain focused on ensuring universal broadband access to all of Australia by the middle of next year," he added.

NBN Co reported $1.3 billion in revenue for the half year ended in December, a 46 per cent increase from the previous corresponding period.

According to its half year results, there is 57 per cent of activated premises connected to the 50 Mbps wholesale download speed tier plans or above, compared to 16 per cent for the same time last year.
